Stanley Bert Eisen was born in upper Manhattan on January 20, 1952. He was the younger of two siblings; his older sister Julia was born two years before him.
Their mother comes from a family who escaped Nazi Germany, first to Amsterdam, then to New York City. His father’s parents were Polish immigrants. Stanley was raised Jewish; however, he did not consider his family to be very religious, and he did not have a bar mitzvah. His parents listened to classical music and light opera, and Beethoven’s compositions impacted Stanley deeply.
Before Kiss, Stanley was a member of Uncle Joe and Post War Baby Boom and a local band called Rainbow. In the early 1970s, Stanley joined Gene Simmons’ band, Wicked Lester, through a mutual friend. In 1972, the band recorded an album, but it was never published. When Wicked Lester came apart, Stanley and Simmons responded to an advertisement in Rolling Stone by Peter Criss.
They staged tryouts for a lead guitarist soon after hiring Criss, with Stanley publishing an ad in the Village Voice. Ace Frehley’s playing won the group over, and he was a near-perfect match for the group’s sound. In February 1974, Kiss released their first album self-titled.
